Government regulation is needed to protect the people from the corporations, yes?

Proponents of government regulation of business often suggest that such regulation is needed to protect the public from the decisions that for-profit corporations would make if left to their own devices. Many posts here at Art Of The Possible have suggested that the opposite often occurs, that, in fact, the corporations use government regulation to protect themselves from the public. This point is made surprisingly explicit in this article about the announcement that the FCC will now look into the issue of “early termination” fees that most cell phone companies charge. (more…)
