Perslstein’s Book “Nixonland”: Subject of AoTP Chat Wed at 7 p.m. EDT

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

As previously announced, tomorrow, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. EST we welcome Rick Perlstein, author of Nixonland, to AoTP chat. This review (by the conservative Ross Douthat) in The Atlantic points out why it has been nearly impossible for yours truly to read the book in time (obtained only last Friday) for her own-full-fledged review:

“Nixonland” Author Rick Perlstein in AoTP Chat this Wed. at 7 p.m., EDT

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Historian and blogger Rick Perlstein will be our guest this coming Wednesday in The Lobby chatroom. Currently I am voraciously consuming his excellent book, and will have a post up about it before the chat. Perlstein’s tour de force examination of of Nixon and the GOP is truly a must-read. To participate in chat just undertake the brief sign-up process.

Upcoming AoTP Chats: Steven Horwitz, Greenwald Live from the Democratic National Convention, and Radley Balko

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

But this Wednesday nite, from 7-8:30 p.m. EDT — y’all are stuck with merely moi. Yup, I’ve decide to make ME, ME, ME the subject tomorrow nite, so that everyone who is curious can query me as to how I went from being a GOP-leaning libertarian who, in a period of mental aberration voted for Bush in ‘04, yet still emerged as the sane (really!) person I am today. (And, if you are not the forgiving sort, I’ll accept a certain amount of anathematizing, as long as the tone of the chat doesn’t become wholly lacking in civility.)

On Wednesday, July 30, our chat guest starting at 7. p.m. will be Hayek expert, Prof. Steven Horwitz, an invitation that resulted from demand for him located in this thread. Then, live from the Democratic National Convention, taking place from August 25-28 in Denver, Glenn Greenwald — who will be a credentialed journalist there — will take questions about the convention and issues surrounding it. (Precise chat day and time yet to be determined.) Shortly after Labor Day, we are delighted that the Radley Balko will also appear as an AoTP chat guest, likely on a Wednesday at 7 p.m. (This will be the usual time slot for my moderated chats).

In the meantime, keep those suggestions for chat guests and topics coming in.

(Update) Soliciting Suggestions for Chatroom

Friday, July 18th, 2008

[Update: STEVEN HORWITZ is delighted with the recommendation of him, and will be appearing in the AoTP chatroom at a time soon to be announced. Note his name in caps; the gentleman -- with great good humor -- noted multiple fractures of its correct spelling in comments. To which I also must plead guilty.]

We held our first AoTP chat this past Wednesday, which as jackson posted about led to a fascinating discussion of peak oil. That chat was not, however, dedicated to a particular topic, nor did we have an invited guest — an author, pundit or activist — for participants to interact with and question. But such uses of the chatroom are what we wish to move toward, and we are taking suggestions.

For example, does anyone know of an author on the subject of peak oil who, for a modest honorarium, might be willing to be our guest? What other subjects should we dedicate chats to, and what guests might be appropriate to the topic?

Note: With regard to Kevin Carson’s fine drug war rant post below, we have Radley Balko lined up (and do read that Balko piece; it will infuriate you) as a chat guest, post-Labor Day.
