Homeschooling all but outlawed in CA

A California appeals court ruling clamping down on homeschooling by parents without teaching credentials sent shock waves across the state this week, leaving an estimated 166,000 children as possible truants and their parents at risk of prosecution.

Obama on gay rights

Once upon a time in this election cycle, I supported John Edwards, even though his chances never looked good. When Edwards bowed out, I switched to Obama without thinking about it too much. To me, there was just too much to dislike about Hillary Clinton, and I don’t mean her supposed ’shrillness’.

Civil liberties: Top down versus Bottom up

In his recent op-ed in the New York Times, Jeffrey Rosen argues that Barack Obama would be a stronger defender of civil liberties than Hillary Clinton, although he also adds that Clinton would still be much, much better compared to Bush. Not controversial as far as it goes.

Call me Street Food libertarian

I am, as I’ve said before on my own blog, a big fat cheerful statist. In general, I am less about throwing off the yoke of government and more about adjusting the boot on the neck so that it’s not too uncomfortable. I acknowledge that a certain amount of running roughshod over individual rights is regrettably necessary for the optimal function of society and all…
But now, Big Government have really gone too far.
