O, Canada!

(posted by Mona)

The Vancouver Sun:

Poll shows the U.S. Democratic presidential challenger would beat Stephen Harper

[. . . ]

And, the winner would be … Obama.

Not only do British Columbians strongly prefer Democratic candidate Barack Obama as president of the U.S. over Republican John McCain, they would also choose him as prime minister of Canada.

Further, relatively modest fines for potsmoking are better than prison, and thus on drug policy Canada is far more progressive than the U.S., even if not perfect.

And for all those libertarians who resist really embracing Canada because it’s supposedly more “socialist”: It scored exactly the same as the US in the Economic Freedom of the World Index.

Maybe we’ll be more free after we give the free market another 700 billion injection.

Given the leanings of the BC electorate, that would suggest that either he’s between the Tories and the Grits, or slightly to the left of both. I know that no one would buy that he’s to the left of the NDP. (Well, in British Columbia, anyway; the schmibertarian commenters at Hit & Run keep calling him a Marxist Socialist, which is slightly to Jack Layton’s left.) There’s tended to be very little daylight between Conservatives and Liberals, so it might be difficult to wedge Obama in there. OTOH, if the new, more-batshit Tories actually get a majority government, expect a much larger gap to develop.

Anyway, did anyone ask who they’d be swapping for Obama? Because I’m not sure the US would get the better of the deal.

Our days of sane drug policy are basically gone due to the tories. I’m a conservative at heart, but a Harper majority has too many wingnut social conservatives to make me comfortable.

The glob and muck had a poll last month that said Obama leads something like 3 to 1 over McCain among Canadians.

And we get to choose between Harper and Dion, the two most colourless men in politics.

I remember Will Wilkinson touting Canadian freedom recently, but then everybody reminded him of their Human Rights Commissions. I think it’s illegal to deny the Holocaust there either, so what kind of fun could be had in the frigid north?

  6. bill Says:

The human rights commissions are basically toothless but annoying.

I would point out that couple of Canadian publications printed the infamous Danish Mohammad cartoons, but nobody in the US dared to do so.

Of course Americans believe that only America can be free.

I don’t believe it; I got a job in Canada real quick using this website at http://www.interwork1.ca and the people there were really helpful. I wanted to make mention of them because I know first hand how challenging it can be trying to get work especially if you are like me and making a big move and commitment to go to Canada but don’t yet have work. I hope they can help you too.
