Shreveport LA Police Scandal

(posted by marie)

A Shreveport Louisiana woman, Angie Garbareno, is hauled to the Shreveport police station after a car wreck for suspicion of DWI. Her time in police custody is recorded by a video camera… at least until Officer Willis detaining her turns it off. When the camera resumes recording, the woman is lying in a pool of blood. Garbareno suffered a broken nose, broken teeth, a severe cut on her forehead and bruises on her arms and shoulders. A Police Department spokesman said Garbareno fell down the stairs. Officer Willis was fired shortly after the incident. He was not charged with any crime.

It should be a criminal offense for a cop to turn off the video camera at all, with the presumption of guilt for anything “funny” that happens while it’s off. You know, the way we’re considered automatically guilty of DUI if we refuse a breathalyzer test.

If they’re not doing anything wrong, they’ve got nothing to worry about–right?

I’m surprised police commissioners don’t have shortcut keys for “no evidence of wrongdoing” and “procedures were followed,” just to save time. I’m starting to like the name some Brits have for cops: the filth.
